Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Can’t Afford a Washington DC Apartment, Can You?

So, the machine is running again, and it’s going after the poor AGAIN, you know, cause the election is over* (shhhh don’t ask Scott or Kemp about it unless you are ready for some tears)

What fandangled doodiddley fallacy is currently running around your feed this weekend? I’m seeing an awful lot of Democratic Socialist Ad Hominem action from America’s Unofficial State Media Channel, Fox News. All these blond haired, blue eyed folks, are telling me: If you cannot uproot and move your life from a moderate, middle class city to one of the most expensive cities in the country you are obviously terrible with money and should never be in charge of anything. So, as my inner engineer is wont to do, lets see what the numbers say.

Lets just look at averages for DC right now:

Quick questions: If you were told to move to another city and had to put down a full month’s rent as a security deposit and the first month’s actual rent could you? That’s $4,000 buckaroos on average my dear bonzai, and that’s without your 2.7 kids.

Could you come up with that after paying to move everything, and settling up any debts for your old homestead? Are there any early termination fees for your old lease? Do you have  a car that needs parking permits, a garage spot? Could you do this and not work a few weeks while you do it? Could you do it two months before your new job starts? Thats 8 weeks not getting a check from when this story broke.

Assuming a national average wage $857 per week average before taxes, so that’s around $668.46 weekly take home according to the new tax brackets since she is not married. If she kept that pay grade and tried to move her rent would be between $1,642-$1,996. Her take home is $2,673 monthly so dividing the difference between her rent and her take home 4 times:

  • $2,673(Income) – $1,642 or $1,996(Rent) = $677.84 or $1031.84 (Studio vs. One Bedroom)
  • $677.84 or $1031.84(Money Left Over After Rent) / 4 = $135 or $257

Could you live life on $135-$257 a week?

Lets just look at a few costs and see

  • Average fuel cost per week: $57.69
  • Average internet cost per week: $15
  • Average food cost per week: $115
  • Average phone plan per week: $15
  • Total: $202.69

Conclusion: If you made the average salary in the United States and your Washington DC apartment magically had no utilities or parking or anything, so your only costs were your rent, fuel, internet, phone, and food; if you chose to live in a one bedroom apartment you would short $67.69 a week or $270 a month. If you chose a studio you would have $54.31 a week to spend on luxurious things like heat and electricity and water and healthcare and dental and vision and soap. DC tied with San Francisco for 4th most expensive city in the US and 37th worldwide so maybe we can stop giving the youngest woman ever elected to the senate a tough time on finding an apartment when the majority of people in this country could not do the same damn thing.

Or do you prefer your candidates as big time rollers instead of working class like you?

I thought so.

Cellar Door Skeptics 150: Farming the Blue Vote and Gerrymandering Prop 2

https://www.spreaker.com/user/cellardoorskeptics/farming-the-blue-vote

As promised Cellar Door Skeptics returns this week with more local politics. The team engages with some anti-prop 2 articles, reviews the positive reasons to vote Yes on Prop 2, and talks about how gerrymandering has harmed Michigan. They work through some articles and audio that was pulled from public radio stations in Michigan for being to false in their message.

The next segment they meet with Mark Ludwig running for 80th District Representative in the Allegan, Fennville, and surrounding areas. They discuss his farming business, and why he has decided to start work as a Representative for Michigan. The discussion ranges from education, to ethical farming, and an all around talk about how Mark will bring his humanistic beliefs into local politics.

The show closes with the new segment Quick Saves. This week Hanna talks about an article about swarming mosquitoes and Tanner talks about his experience with his daughter seeing Spirited Away.

Cellar Door Skeptics 149: Changing the Political Landscape with Ron, Garnet, and Jerry

The local political discussion continues with Cellar Door Skeptics as they interview politics at the local level who will help make a difference in our society. The GOP continues to want to claim states rights is the only way to go. Well we feel we need to fight back by taking local politics back while moving Michigan from a hazy red toward a strong blue. The wave is coming and without your voice, we can not change society to be more progressive without you.

This week we talk with Ron Draayer running for office in the 72 district, Garnet Lewis in the 26th District, and Jerry in the 89th district. The common theme we talk about is helping the populous of Michigan, while continuing to help those in need. Each candidate focuses on how they can help shape Michigan to be more humanistic in their values while protecting minorities and creating as fair a landscape as possible.

Cellar Door Skeptics 148: Schipper and Banks Putting the D in Democrat

By now you know that the show is discussing local politics and the importance of getting out to vote this November. This week the duo interview candidates in Tanner’s district in Ottawa County. Tanner meets with both candidates to talk about their stories, their desire to improve our society, and what got them into politics. This week is special as Tanner connects with people who affect his local community and the communities around him.

They talk through healthcare in Michigan with an emphasis on Mental Health and how Michigan could be better at working through their issues with healthcare. But the meat of the episode is when Tanner talks with both guests on their entry into politics, how they are more humanistic than the GOP counterparts, while continuing to work toward the electorate.

This episode mixes their personal beliefs with challenges for the candidates they endorse to try and work toward a way to keep them honest while fixing the immediate problems Michigan has.

GOP Fat Tax Plan Cash Windfall for the Few and $39 for Grandpa and Grandma…

The government has increased the social security rate for retirees to account for increases in cost of living. The value? $39 a month or $468 per year.

Just for contextual reference that’s $468 for the approximately 61 million monthly recipients. Totaling $28.548 billion. Man, that’s a lot of cheddar.

So let’s compare the tax reform costs too!Taxpayers in the top 1% — defined as those making over $730,000 — would receive 20% of the total tax cut from the bill. They’d get an average cut of $37,000, which translates to about 2.4% of their after-tax income. That’s $3,083 a month folks.

The IRS publishes some data but they don’t have a $730,000 cut off. For people above $500,000, there were 1,245,279 tax returns in 2014 that had $500,000 or more. So with a quick cutoff of 250k people I will assume 1 million $730k plus returns.

So… $37,000 * 1,000,000 top earners = $3.7 billion as the cost to the government to give people who almost make a million dollars a year $37,000 more but 61 times more people who are retired are only given $468 more. Thanks GOP, you are almost helping.

Cellar Door Skeptics 147: Early Prevention with the Blue Wave Vaccine, Featuring Heidi Zuniga

Cellar Door Skeptics has started the push to help give a voice to the local candidates running for office in Michigan. They start their series talking with the candidates that will make a difference if elected into office this year.

The series kicks off by talking with Democrat, Mother, and Teacher Heidi Zuniga. We talk a look at the 88th district and the changes that Heidi could bring to help decrease the amount of Red we all see in our state. She is facing off against Luke Meerman, an ultra conservative Republican who has a hard time working for women’s rights while using his status, money, and friends to help get him a seat on the ticket this November.

We talk with Heidi about the beginning of her campaign, what she is doing to better her community, and why we should work toward voting in grassroots campaigns that care about the constituents without succumbing to large corporate interests.

Check out a down to earth women who deserves your vote this November.

Cellar Door Skeptics 145: Demon Rats Summon Brett Kavanagh from the Dead

“In the immortal words of BMO: Sometimes life is scary and dark. That is why we must find the light.”

Cellar Door Skeptics takes a serious turn this week looking at the Brett Kavanagh situation and some the ridiculous arguments people are using to try and demonize those who support the women he abused. We look into why people feel the need to try and minimize women like they have been doing for thousands of years while looking at why this is NOT a witch hunt but society starting to come to terms with how we need to change how we treat women. They side step into a science segment on a new discovery of how a new non-toxic glue could help revolutionize the toxic waste our societies produce. The shows last segment covers China’s new social credit score. Chris Squared discuss amongst themselves their hesitancy toward this new policy all while Hanna poses a solution that Tanner does not quite agree with. This segment they talk through the pro’s and con’s of Hanna’s solution while looking at alternative ways to help deter the problematic parts of the internet. The show’s final note rings true with a new quick segment called “Quick Save” where they discuss an article or circumstance that they each quick saved and looked back on later as a new idea that made them stop and think while appreciating life a little bit more.

Cellar Door Skeptics 144: Before Orion

LISTEN HERE https://www.spreaker.com/user/cellardoorskeptics/before-orion

This week Cellar Door Skeptics is coming at you with a fresh episode while changing up their normal discussion. The episode starts with some friendly banter about a “Non” ruling by the supreme court on the disclosure of donors to a Non Profit Organization. They talk through what it could mean for those who donate and if we should be worried. The meat of the show though is an interview with Bernie Taylor. Bernie Taylor is the author of Before Orion a discussion on Monomyths and how religion could all be related. “Before Orion explores a deeper root for this monomyth by looking at how hunter-gatherers viewed themselves within the natural and spiritual worlds through Paleolithic cave art from 40,000 years ago.” This interview was very interesting and provided a unique perspective on the origins of religion.
