CLICK THE IMAGE TO LISTEN TO THE SHOW!

Each week the duo tries to bring important topics to the forefront of the conversation. This week they examine some of the proposed bills that are pushing the Democratic Party more progressive. They talk about what this means for the party, and if it is just a wave from this last election or is the party starting to look at other options to help encompass other voters who felt isolated after the 2016 primary.

The Charity of the Week focuses on Wigs for Kids. This amazing charity helps make it possible for children to receive wigs if cancer has helped remove the hair on their heads. This organization has played a big role within Michigan providing over 4000 wigs to children in Michigan. This episodes in depth analysis segment reviews research funding. Chris squared look into whether Federal Funding has played a bigger role in new technology and advancements or if Capitalism and Big Business are the drivers of where we are at today. They review several papers along with research articles that talk through some of the history as well as the standard for research inside of the US.

The show ends as always with Hanna’s and Tanner’s Infamous Quick Saves of the week.

Cellar Door Skeptics 159: Choose Your Own Michigan in 2019

CLICK THE IMAGE TO LISTEN!

After a short break, Cellar Door Skeptics comes back to life with an episode recapping of the happenings over break. Tanner recently watched Bandersnatch with his son and he reviews the movie, relates it to his childhood, and has a little bit of fun decompressing from the nightmare that politics has been over the last couple weeks.

The show continues talking about a new charity research and ratings website that is like the Yelp of nonprofits. They look through the website and bring to light some of the amazing ways to find which charity you can donate to for the upcoming year.

The science segment comes back this year with a look at Saturn’s rings. They talk through some of the evolution of the rings while immersing themselves in a good dose of science and how long it could be before Saturn divorces the universe.

The show closes with a discussion on what happened after the close of the Michigan Lame Duck session last month. They review the victories and losses while reminiscing what it would be like to not have lame duck sessions ever again.

Cellar Door Skeptics 156: Predicting 2020 and The Competition

If you thought the show was becoming stale, check out this week’s episode with the C Plus Plus duo, which is their new nickname thanks to an amazing listener last week. The duo talks through a Florida community that got hit by the Marijuana Bug and had a 12 year old sell marijuana edibles to students in one of their counties. The problem comes when Fox and Friends tries to associate Marijuana with overdosing and toxic environment that harms children. The child got 7 felonies for distributing the drug and Tanner goes on a rant to discuss that there is no reason why this child should face that many years in jail for selling pot.

They also talk about the local charity of the week called Creative Youth Center in Grand Rapids, promoting creative writing skills amongst local children within the Grand Rapids city limits. This charity helps students bring out their creative skills and develop creative thinking skills to help them have a more rounded life.

They continue with a Hanna Rant on Thermodynamics and some of the discussions that have plagued his facebook wall over the last week. This quick science segment tackles how some of the inconsistencies that people normally like to spout when they want to disprove evolution.

The show ends discussing some tactics that should be used in the 2020 election period. The discussion surrounds some of the key points on how to tackle the Trump Problem and how we can focus on creating a better more constructive environment within our government.

The show ends with Hanna’s and Tanner’s Quick Saves of the week.

Cellar Door Skeptics 155: Should Lame Ducks Be Allowed to Fly

Cellar Door Skeptics hits many topics this week. They work their way through some of the new Devos rules and how you can get involved in making your voice heard about the atrocity that she is trying to push on our schools. The charity of the week is Kids Food Basket and it is close to Tanner’s heart. The impact they make is amazing for the Grand Rapids, Holland, and Muskegon community. The show continues with a discussion on whether the Lame Duck Sessions in Congress should be continued to be allowed or if we should change how much influence the leaving congress has on the state. They close by talking about Penny Stocks and the new Pot Stocks that High Times are pushing.

Cellar Door Skeptics 154: A Trail of Tear Gas

Cellar Door Skeptics starts the show off talking about their Thanksgiving experiences and if the politics divided their dinner tables this year. They also talked about their charity of the week BeNice. Mental health is the main focus for this program as it works to educate schools on bullying and techniques to help schools better cope with the issues that are affecting students now a days. Their science segment this week looks at Plants and Ants, which came first and how evolution played a role between species that are not able to breed. The political segment this week talks about Trump’s desire to take control of the military troops to “protect” the border without running afoul of Congress. He has authorized “Force” for the troops to deter individuals seeking asylum. The duo looks at what legal asylum is and if Trump is violating the law. They also examine the border spectrum to determine what the long game that Trump is trying to play. The show ends as usual with the Quick Saves of the week.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Can’t Afford a Washington DC Apartment, Can You?

So, the machine is running again, and it’s going after the poor AGAIN, you know, cause the election is over* (shhhh don’t ask Scott or Kemp about it unless you are ready for some tears)

What fandangled doodiddley fallacy is currently running around your feed this weekend? I’m seeing an awful lot of Democratic Socialist Ad Hominem action from America’s Unofficial State Media Channel, Fox News. All these blond haired, blue eyed folks, are telling me: If you cannot uproot and move your life from a moderate, middle class city to one of the most expensive cities in the country you are obviously terrible with money and should never be in charge of anything. So, as my inner engineer is wont to do, lets see what the numbers say.

Lets just look at averages for DC right now:

Quick questions: If you were told to move to another city and had to put down a full month’s rent as a security deposit and the first month’s actual rent could you? That’s $4,000 buckaroos on average my dear bonzai, and that’s without your 2.7 kids.

Could you come up with that after paying to move everything, and settling up any debts for your old homestead? Are there any early termination fees for your old lease? Do you have  a car that needs parking permits, a garage spot? Could you do this and not work a few weeks while you do it? Could you do it two months before your new job starts? Thats 8 weeks not getting a check from when this story broke.

Assuming a national average wage $857 per week average before taxes, so that’s around $668.46 weekly take home according to the new tax brackets since she is not married. If she kept that pay grade and tried to move her rent would be between $1,642-$1,996. Her take home is $2,673 monthly so dividing the difference between her rent and her take home 4 times:

  • $2,673(Income) – $1,642 or $1,996(Rent) = $677.84 or $1031.84 (Studio vs. One Bedroom)
  • $677.84 or $1031.84(Money Left Over After Rent) / 4 = $135 or $257

Could you live life on $135-$257 a week?

Lets just look at a few costs and see

  • Average fuel cost per week: $57.69
  • Average internet cost per week: $15
  • Average food cost per week: $115
  • Average phone plan per week: $15
  • Total: $202.69

Conclusion: If you made the average salary in the United States and your Washington DC apartment magically had no utilities or parking or anything, so your only costs were your rent, fuel, internet, phone, and food; if you chose to live in a one bedroom apartment you would short $67.69 a week or $270 a month. If you chose a studio you would have $54.31 a week to spend on luxurious things like heat and electricity and water and healthcare and dental and vision and soap. DC tied with San Francisco for 4th most expensive city in the US and 37th worldwide so maybe we can stop giving the youngest woman ever elected to the senate a tough time on finding an apartment when the majority of people in this country could not do the same damn thing.

Or do you prefer your candidates as big time rollers instead of working class like you?

I thought so.
