The Journey from Discovery to Action: My Thoughts on Reason Con 2015

As I flew back from the most recent adventure, I felt the need to record my thoughts, feelings, excitement, and loss. If you did not know, Jonathan and I went to ReasonCon in North Carolina this weekend. We were able to meet each other for the first time, were able to meet some of our supporters and fans, and were able to lay out plans for future episodes and events. The event itself was an amazing experience and could not have been done without the help of some donors and fellow patreons. We are deeply grateful for this opportunity to be able to grow as individuals, while bringing together many individuals in the secular community. Many thanks go out to Robert and Lisa Burrows, Shane, Wes, and Robert plus the many patreon supporters on our network.

What The Hell is ReasonCon?

For those of you that have never been to an atheist convention, do yourself a favor and find one that is in your area and attend. I can attest this is a very rewarding experience and one that I hope everyone gets a chance to experience. The stories and lives of every individual that goes are so amazing and unique that there is no way you will be able to just go to one, nor to meet everyone who has come. The days are filled with companionship, camaraderie, food, love and experiencing others’ lives through stories. These two days were amazing and I heard many peoples’ stories that are so unique but similar at the same time that you almost feel like you are living their lives while they tell their stories. ReasonCon provides the outlet for many individuals who do not have an easy life as secularists living in a mainly religious environment. Yet, we saw many individuals reaching out to help others while at the conference. The love spilled over their cup, if I may steal a christian reference. This conference focused on many different avenues within the secular movement, but most of all offered an opportunity to allow fellow secularists to engage each other, develop new ways of interacting within our communities, and helped us see that there is still more work to be done to help everyone safely come out if they feel the desire to do so.

Grillin’ with Atheists: Humble Beginnings and Helping Those in Need

Charity is very important to helping those in society that have fallen on hard times or those that are less fortunate than we are.  Ultimately, charity is a necessary function to help move humanity forward; the government should’nt be the only ones providing charity.  Many non-profit organizations provide a way for people to engage, help out, and support humanity.  We here at Atheist Analysis feel this is a very important function and one that we want to contribute to as much as we can.

Godless Offering Ep 19: George Zimmerman Did It Again

Christopher and Jonny discuss the recent George Zimmerman incident where he has officially been arrested and charged with assault for the 4th time in under 2 years. This probably does not come as a surprise to those of you who believe he was guilty, but given his release we need to analyze what happened and hopefully get him put away for his over aggressive nature towards others.

Religious Indoctrination Is Child Abuse [VIDEO]

“We all know that any emotional bias — irrespective of truth or falsity — can be implanted by suggestion in the emotions of the young, hence the inherited traditions of an orthodox community are absolutely without evidential value…. If religion were true, its followers would not try to bludgeon their young into an artificial conformity; but would merely insist on their unbending quest for truth, irrespective of artificial backgrounds or practical consequences. With such an honest and inflexible openness to evidence, they could not fail to receive any real truth which might be manifesting itself around them. The fact that religionists do not follow this honourable course, but cheat at their game by invoking juvenile quasi-hypnosis, is enough to destroy their pretensions in my eyes even if their absurdity were not manifest in every other direction.”

Have Some of The Newsboys Turned Atheist?

The Newsboys, an Australian Christian Rock band that started in the 1980’s and has received national success within the Christian Rock Scene.  They are responsible for the most recent hit off the sound track God‘s Not Dead and were an intricate part of many children of the late 80’s and 90’s as they were a clean and wholesome group that promoted god through their lyrics and their lives.  But what if we told you that even a band that spent years within the main stream Christian industry has a founding member that was now an Atheist?  That probably would not surprise many of you because most atheists have at least heard of a christian leaving religion and becoming an atheist if not experienced that themselves.  The motives are always different and the story only slightly similar as many atheist have a different story to tell.

0104

Tonight we will be talking George Perdikis, one of the original founding members of The Newsboys group.  We will get to talk with him about why he left the Newsboys, what he has been doing since, and what happens within the Christian Music scene.  He will graciously share his story about leaving the faith.  George also comes to us with some Christian Music Industry experience.  He has a story to tell about the industry and how it has morphed into a money machine that is similar to the secular industries.  We will learn George’s thoughts on what needs to change, and will help to take an inside look into an industry that more and more Christians are leaving.

Lastly tonight, we will talk with Matthew Facciani about the Science behind Religious Belief .  As a Neuroscience major, his expertise will show us why we are drawn towards religion and a more scientific way to counter beliefs.  He will give us a 30 minute presentation that will challenge everyone about on how we talk to people of faith and if there is better methods than what we are currently using.

Somebody took my folding table, so I’m out of business

Inspiration comes in small packages. Meet “Jeff” “47” from New York as he shares his story:

books“I’d been doing nothing but drinking for months on end, so I was getting pretty despondent. Then one day, a guy walked by with a hand truck, and dropped off two big boxes of books for anyone to take. I decided to set up a bookstand. I got a folding table, and three milk cartons, and set up right across the street. Pretty soon, more people were bringing me books, and I would sell them for $1 apiece. I had a pretty cool selection. I even had books from the 1800’s. But I sold them all for just $1. I called my business The Book Worm. I had a logo and everything—a little worm with reading glasses. I didn’t make much money. Just enough for food and some drinks, but it increased my self-esteem 10,000 percent. I never thought I’d be running my own business. I was drinking less and everything. But somebody took my folding table, so I’m out of business until I can find a new one. It sounds kind of ridiculous, but the whole business hinges on a folding table.”

“If this man can create such a dramatic change in his life’s path with a folding table – ask yourself what you can do with seemingly unlimited resources. What’s your folding table?” – Jennifer Rahe

Finding the “best of the best” can be a daunting task. You want it. You need it. You crave it. Reddit has a system of “voting” basically. It allows users to rate content from all over the web so the good stuff is in plain sight, and the less than good stuff gets buried. Reddit is the world’s web’s largest atheist forum covering all topics related to atheism, agnosticism and secular living.

Resources are key. You have to be able to find what you are looking for in a moments notice. This page “keeps the links on a given page to a reasonable number.” avoiding Social Media Groups/Pages and Spam.  Atheism United Wiki List, might just be the most conclusive list of websites related to atheism, agnosticism, skepticism, humanism, non-belief, and any other godless word you choose to use.

Again, Resources are key. No one site has them all. The structure of this site is simple and effective. This directory includes most of the top atheist websites plus some useful small sites. Note that the category structure is necessarily imperfect since some sites could fit into more than one group. Also note that several categories contain links to articles and other resources that might interest an atheist.

[VIDEO] Theists Suffer Massive Losses Over 2014 Atheist Activism

In 2014, as it was in 2013 “atheism was more studied, and better understood, than ever before.” We’ve seen an explosion of media: Podcasts, Web Shows, Blogs, Social Media Groups and Pages, Memes… The World’s first and only TV channel dedicated exclusively to superstition-free programming. “Woo-Free TV” and Atheist TV.

Richard Dawkins Tweets, Neil deGrasse Tyson Tweets,  “Cosmos”, and Dawkins again with Lawrence Krauss “The Unbelievers”. Moving to the the exact opposite, Kirk Cameron’s “Saving Christmas” auspiciously rated Worst Movie on IMDB.

We had 2 major Atheist Books hit the Best Selling List: Barbara’s “Living With a Wild God”, She was Humanist of the Year 98’, still going strong, and Sam Harris’s “Waking Up”. Sam Harris even teamed up with Bill Maher against Ben Affleck for mainstream debate.

Speaking of debates… Sean Carroll and William Lane Craig on the Kalam Cosmological Argument or the more publicized Bill Nye and Ken Hamm Debate?… Popular Christian Website, “Christianity Today” held a poll after the debate: 92% said Bill Nye was more convincing. A debate that needs no poll, Matt Dillahunty vs Sye Ten Bruggencate, in Memphis, TN, organized by significant contributor to the Atheist Community Sarah Morehead, was a critical success.
