Cellar Door Skeptics 173:Changing Your Mind Through Psychedelics

Cellar Door Skeptics is back again with another timeless episode. This week the duo take a break from a solely political episode to talk about the book How to Change Your Mind. They journey through some of the studies that talk about psychedelics and how they can affect us and what the sciences are saying about them. They also review studies about micro dosing and how those affect how people perceive “alternative medicines”. They do touch on how trump might not be good for himself in the midst of the 2020 election looming over us.

The show ends as usual with Tanner and Hanna’s quick save selections for the week.

Cellar Door Skeptics 129: Kneeling in Solidarity

This week’s episode begins with a discussion on Memorial Day. The duo talks about their feelings for the holiday, the special happenings in their lives, and how they handle this holiday with relatives and others who celebrate it.

They continue with an interview with Blasphemy Apparel , a local Michigan company dedicated to free speech, while driving forward the image that nothing is held above ridicule, discussion, and approach.

The episode closes with a powerful segment talking about the new NFL rule where they claim to fine NFL teams for players who refuse to stand for the national anthem. This topic hits close to home as Chris Squared work together as allies fighting against oppression of POC and the many deaths our government has dealt them. They express their honest opinions of what they feel the NFL has done, and where the NFL’s loyalty lay.

Cellar Door Skeptics 127: Center For Inquiry and Civics Day

Today’s episode is special and one that Tanner felt was needed after a long day of talking to legislators. This episode is done in solo as Hanna has taken off a few weeks to be with his wife and newborn daughter.

This episode will focus on the recent Civic’s Day hosted by CFI Michigan at the Michigan State capitol building. The episode will talk about his experiences, the desire to start working toward changing people’s minds when it comes to interacting with local politics, and staying involved with up to date information about the bills going around in Michigan.

The goals the Chris Squared Duo have set for themselves and their desire to promote local politics first, lead them to start researching and attending different events in an effort to continue their pursuit of a better government.

Sit back, relax, grab a drink (especially unsweetened ice tea), and listen in as Tanner talks about learning to become more involved politically.

Cellar Door Skeptics 126: Alpha God: The Psychology of Religious Violence and Oppression

This episode is a solo effort by Tanner, as Hanna’s wife just had their second child and he is taking time off to be with the family. We wish him the best and are excited to see all the amazing baby pictures whenever he recovers from the shock of being a father a second time.

The episode though is close to Tanner’s heart as he interviews Dr Hector Garcia, author of Alpha God The Psychology of Religious Violence and Oppression. As we all know Tanner loves evolution and this discussion hits home as he talks with the doctor about religion and how evolution played a big role in how it developed, adapted, and gives us even more reason to disbelieve the fairy tale that has encapsulated millions throughout the last couple millenia.

But without giving away to much of the book check out this latest episode with the amazing Dr Hector Garcia as he inspires Tanner with new theories and discussion points on the origins of religion.

Cellar Door Skeptics 124: Women v. Religion: The Case Against Faith

This week on Cellar Door Skeptics, Tanner interviews three amazing authors representing their new book, Women VS Religion. Alexis, Candace, and Karen join the show to talk about their essays on how religion has affected them as women.

The book is a collection of essays by different women, from different walks of life, all talking about the damage that religion has done to women. Each essay is a different story told through different lenses to allow for a unique blend of upbringing, beliefs, apostasy, and an understanding on how to survive the different aspects of religion as a women.

The show is important because it helps to highlight the unique struggles women face during and after religion has touched or been apart of their lives. This episode is special as it gave Tanner a perspective of how others suffer differently than he has while showing the amazing strength of others and what they have to go through.

Cellar Door Skeptics 120: Betsy Devos Dumpster Fire and Jesus Returns

Cellar Door Skeptics returns this week with an in depth look into Betsy Devos and her recent interview blunder. The duo talks through the fact that she was not able to present her platform with anything more than talking points. They also examine the school rankings in hopes that Betsy will listen to the episode and be able to actually go to some of the schools that may need help. They also compare the difference in rating from Charter Schools to Public Schools to see if there is any truth behind Betsy Devos candid claim that Choice is Better.

Later Tanner interviews Author Matthew James a PHD Neuroscientist who has written a book about Jesus Returning. Now this is not your average book and the interview is full of irrelevance and laughter. The book is about Jesus coming back to try and reclaim the earth after the failure of his father, God, to do so. Humans are just running to wild without his divine presence and Jesus tries to rectify it. This light hearted interview will let you get to know the author and preview a funny book.

The show ends on a high note, talking about Fusion and how it is playing a role in changing how we perceive energy. They talk through the science behind a new experiment done recently and examine what fruits may come from this type of discovery.

Don’t forget you can join Cellar Door Skeptics April 7th at the Michigan Atheist 30th State convention in Farmington Hills Michigan.

If I was a Shriner . . .

Something that I haven’t experienced in a while happened over the weekend. I was helping my grandfather’s friends in the Shriners load 400lbs of Vidalia onions they are storing at my shop, after cordial greetings and solid tough guy man hand shakes of course, when the one gentleman asks if I was a Shriner.
My response was a light head shake in the negatory and a simple “nope”. He, as was to be expected, then asked “when I would be a Shriner”. Knowing as I do, the organization at hand and the impossibility of my fraternite’ within it, I immediately knew it was walking on eggshells time.

My response was the standard that I give to such invitations from similar groups, smiling sincerely now, “due to differences in philosophy or world view which you and my grandfather can discuss if you wish, I simply would not be able to join.”

Now came a moment of contemplation on his part, he looked to the onions in the bed of the truck considering what such a difference could be, his eyes then widened, turned to me and asked “do you believe in god?”

I was still smiling, for I knew where this was going from the moment we started our dance. I simply and calmly, with a smile still, answered “No I don’t” and then waited. Two things were about to happen, a debate or an abrupt end to the discussion.

To my approval, it was simply the end of the conversation. But something interesting started, otherwise why would I be telling you about this. He immediately had to get away from me, he quickly changed in posture and moved to the far side of the struck where my grandfather and his other friend were talking. No words, just staring at me uncertainly, just a need to back away and regroup. Regaining some of his posture he shook my hand right before they left but it was cold and wet now, no longer the healthy rigid shake or eye contact from a mere moment before.

The Shriners expect a deistic admission, at least, to be granted into their ranks and I wonder if they will ever realize the number of people like me who could enthusiastically and very heavily help in person and or financially if they could look beyond such trivial matters.

So, I think of Christopher Hitchens and one of his devious maxims: “Here is my challenge. Let someone name one ethical statement made, or one ethical action performed, by a believer that could not have been uttered or done by a nonbeliever.” Henceforth The Foundation Beyond Belief is where I still give my charity and shall be for some time as we still deal with the diversity of identity in these “most modern of times”.

-Thoughts from Chris Hanna
