Letter from the Editor: I’m Just Tired

As the title says, I’m just tired, exhausted, worn down, exasperated… Does anyone else feel it?

Wait, let me elaborate before you sigh and cast your weary gaze to the back button, expecting this to be nothing but a series of complaints from a millennial who actually has to work for his money. You would be quite wrong, of course, as I rarely give people exactly what they expect.

As an activist, blogger, podcast host, engineer, homeowner, small business owner, husband, responsible pet owner, and soon to be father of a tiny human female I accept the weariness this will dispel. I understand that life can be filled with siestas and 40 hour cog in the machine workweeks if one can willingly submit. I understand all of these things but that is not the reason for my fatigue, it is the repetition.

Repetition in argumentation, repetition in political idiocy, repetition in online bigotry, repetition in financial irresponsibility, repetition of traditional oppression, and the list goes on and on…

I am so tired of the same arguments from the right wing arch conservatives: gay marriage will destroy all moral structure ending in malicious bestiality, deregulation of the economy will create more jobs not slave wages and serfdom, tax breaks-school funding / social programming cuts will force the poor to actually work, and Obama is a Muslim Nazi.

I am so tired of reading stories of political leaders announcing their intentions to take big money out of politics when we can see the list of their campaign contributors are the top wall street mega corporations. I am tired of politicians charged with protecting the American people putting “Freedom”, “Patriot”, or “Religious Freedom” at the beginning of some of the most subversive legislation to ever attack our basic human rights. And, I am tired of a two party system that uses unethical financial bullying to prevent decent discourse and the diversity of the people from being represented in our “Democratic Republic” election cycles.

Was Hitler an Atheist? The Norwegian Atheist Weighs In.

Most Christian’s like to tell each other that Hitler was an atheist, and that might very well be true. They also use this argument when they want to convince atheists that, yes, you need God in order to be good, if not you will go to hell and burn for all eternity. Of course what most Christian’s don’t tell you is that Hitler is not burning in hell if we buy into their theory of forgiveness, what with Jesus supposedly dying on the cross and all.

So there is in fact no threat at all to say that anyone is going to hell for something, since all you have to do is to ask Jesus for forgiveness. Which he according to most Christian’s always provides; on the other hand not all Christian’s have read their bible because Jesus does not always forgive it turns out.

Matthew 6:15 “But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”

Matthew 12:31 “Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.

It Isn’t ‘Survival of the @$$hole’ – A General Explanation of ‘Survival of the Fittest’

I mentioned in my first article that the ‘Cambrian explosion’ takes second place on my list of evolutionary concepts horrifically misrepresented by creationists. It seems only fair that I dedicate this article to the concept that tops the chart. Sadly, it’s not just creationists responsible for butchering this one – misrepresenting ‘survival of the fittest’ has practically become a national hobby.

What ‘Survival of the Fittest’ Doesn’t Mean

This solitary aspect of evolution may be held up as justification for dreadful behavior more often than all other pitiably poor defenses combined. I’ve personally seen it evoked as justification for bullying to the point of encouraging suicide, all manner of eugenics, rape, and even child abuse. As with so many scientific misrepresentations, the abuse of ‘survival of the fittest’ begins with a faulty definition. ‘Fit’, by evolutionary standards, does not mean the strongest, biggest, most powerful, most aggressive, or even the most physically sound. Evolutionary ‘fitness’ is not always, in fact, determined by physicality at all.
