Cellar Door Skeptics 154: A Trail of Tear Gas

Cellar Door Skeptics starts the show off talking about their Thanksgiving experiences and if the politics divided their dinner tables this year. They also talked about their charity of the week BeNice. Mental health is the main focus for this program as it works to educate schools on bullying and techniques to help schools better cope with the issues that are affecting students now a days. Their science segment this week looks at Plants and Ants, which came first and how evolution played a role between species that are not able to breed. The political segment this week talks about Trump’s desire to take control of the military troops to “protect” the border without running afoul of Congress. He has authorized “Force” for the troops to deter individuals seeking asylum. The duo looks at what legal asylum is and if Trump is violating the law. They also examine the border spectrum to determine what the long game that Trump is trying to play. The show ends as usual with the Quick Saves of the week.

Cellar Door Skeptics 150: Farming the Blue Vote and Gerrymandering Prop 2

https://www.spreaker.com/user/cellardoorskeptics/farming-the-blue-vote

As promised Cellar Door Skeptics returns this week with more local politics. The team engages with some anti-prop 2 articles, reviews the positive reasons to vote Yes on Prop 2, and talks about how gerrymandering has harmed Michigan. They work through some articles and audio that was pulled from public radio stations in Michigan for being to false in their message.

The next segment they meet with Mark Ludwig running for 80th District Representative in the Allegan, Fennville, and surrounding areas. They discuss his farming business, and why he has decided to start work as a Representative for Michigan. The discussion ranges from education, to ethical farming, and an all around talk about how Mark will bring his humanistic beliefs into local politics.

The show closes with the new segment Quick Saves. This week Hanna talks about an article about swarming mosquitoes and Tanner talks about his experience with his daughter seeing Spirited Away.

Cellar Door Skeptics 149: Changing the Political Landscape with Ron, Garnet, and Jerry

The local political discussion continues with Cellar Door Skeptics as they interview politics at the local level who will help make a difference in our society. The GOP continues to want to claim states rights is the only way to go. Well we feel we need to fight back by taking local politics back while moving Michigan from a hazy red toward a strong blue. The wave is coming and without your voice, we can not change society to be more progressive without you.

This week we talk with Ron Draayer running for office in the 72 district, Garnet Lewis in the 26th District, and Jerry in the 89th district. The common theme we talk about is helping the populous of Michigan, while continuing to help those in need. Each candidate focuses on how they can help shape Michigan to be more humanistic in their values while protecting minorities and creating as fair a landscape as possible.

Cellar Door Skeptics 147: Early Prevention with the Blue Wave Vaccine, Featuring Heidi Zuniga

Cellar Door Skeptics has started the push to help give a voice to the local candidates running for office in Michigan. They start their series talking with the candidates that will make a difference if elected into office this year.

The series kicks off by talking with Democrat, Mother, and Teacher Heidi Zuniga. We talk a look at the 88th district and the changes that Heidi could bring to help decrease the amount of Red we all see in our state. She is facing off against Luke Meerman, an ultra conservative Republican who has a hard time working for women’s rights while using his status, money, and friends to help get him a seat on the ticket this November.

We talk with Heidi about the beginning of her campaign, what she is doing to better her community, and why we should work toward voting in grassroots campaigns that care about the constituents without succumbing to large corporate interests.

Check out a down to earth women who deserves your vote this November.

Cellar Door Skeptics 122: Is the Atheist Movement the Sensible Middle

Cellar Door Skeptics begins the episode this week talking about the media corporations, specifically Sinclair, and what it means to have one corporation own 70% of the media networks. The discussion surrounds printed newspapers and if the country would move back to printed media if we started to have to pay for online articles.

The duo also look at Bill “Shootee” new proposal to help children read. Essentially his idea was to have a public place and demand kids read. This sounds like an authoritarian version of a library. Funny how in the last 5 years that the GOP has controlled Michigan we are only now trying to deal with our education problem.

Lastly Chris Squared decided to talk about a recent article in Vice about how the Atheist movement looks like it is veering toward an alt right political position. They tackle the dialog between the Vice article and a Friendly Atheist article. As they flesh out these two articles, an earnest discussion started with a look at a prominent Atheist whose political beliefs have veered toward a Neo-con mentality. They deconstruct whether the “Sensible Middle” is where the Atheist movement has always been or if it is leaving and heading more conservative.

Cellar Door Skeptics #96: Michigan Fails to Pardon Dispensaries

Cellar Door Skeptics is back at it again examining some more articles that will leave you questioning humanity.  This week the duo takes the plunge and attacks the infamous Michigan Governor Dick and his ragtime Medical Marijuana Board.  This time the state is “confused” on what to do with dispensaries and they are shutting them down and leaving people in the lurches and under criminal investigation.  The show continues by talking about a scientific article that has revealed some dirty laundry about “Big Oil”.  The team examines the soiled remains of how Oil companies purposely mislead people by claiming Climate Change is not real.  The show ends with a frank discussion on Trump’s pardon of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and how this will affect the nation moving forward.

Evil Empire: Michigan Governor Rick Snyder’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act for Adoption

Governor Rick Snyder would rather have 13,000 children languish in state sponsored homes and foster care than let any one of them be adopted by two loving men or women. There I said it, we all know thats what he really means. The recently rushed and signed (June 11) bill by the Michigan Governor is essentially the Religious Freedom Restoration Act for adoption and has already drawn the ire of the ACLU. The same derogatory and incendiary language for refusing services based on “sincerely held religious beliefs” has been passed in Michigan with little or no mention from any social media sphere even with the almost identical Indiana bill, complete with collective uproar, happening only a short while ago.. Sad proof that without prompt most of us just simply don’t care enough to participate unless CNN or Fox News scream it into our lives.

I have heard three arguments for the support of such a bill and they are as follows:

  1. “This is about making sure we get the largest number of kids in forever families,” Snyder said in a phone interview. “The more opportunities and organizations we have that are doing a good job of placing people in loving families, isn’t that better for all of us?”
  2. The moral and traditional two parent, dual sex household is the best and only acceptable home for an adopted child.
  3. There is an economic reason for turning away these homosexual couples and the state cannot handle any more costs.

Well the first one is just a quotation of Governor Snyder’s deceitful and distraction oriented word salad. Here is another similar response from Governor Snyder before we start analyzing his diatribe:

“We are focused on ensuring that as many children are adopted to as many loving families as possible regardless of their makeup.”

lonely-604086_640

Essentially what he is saying is that since the number of children adopted every year is going up (85% in 2014 up from 70% in 2011) the state of Michigan can justify the religiously bigoted beliefs of certain organizations even if it results in 13,000 leftover children who live yet another year as wards of the state.

My argument for this always reverts back to the civil rights movements of the 60’s and simply replaces the couple requesting the adoption of an eager, desperate, and loving child from a homosexual couple to a black couple. Religious justifications were then and are still used for the discrimination of African American i.e. black people all over the world including the US. This new law would allow, hypothetically speaking of course, the new Ken Ham Creation Adoption Center to refuse in allowing a black male and female couple (cursed with the mark of Cain or Ham) to adopt a new baby as long as they gave a list of other adoption centers they could try or give them the state index resource list. I would like even FOX news to try to justify that over the round of racist applause from the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (note to self stay out of Wyoming).

A Letter from the Editor

Recently a response from a dear friend of mine made its way through one of the many channels of social media and rightly states a case for introspection within our community –  a self analysis, an understanding of opposition perspective, and – most importantly – a change if deemed necessary; to refuse change would be to act with an ideology akin to what we regularly rally to ridicule and weaken.

The entirety of the response can be found immediately below and is being reproduced with complete consent of its author- once again, someone I respect highly and genuinely value in perspective and friendship.

“I found this to be an interesting article regarding Atheists. What illuminated for me was this quote, “I, for one, would just like to be able to express my views in an intelligent and heart-felt way without fear of reprisals, shunned, or otherwise being looked at as an abomination just because I do not believe in God” My assumption is the author is referring to his/her frustrations with theists when presenting his/her convictions regarding God, gods, or the lack thereof. The author emphasizes a desire for acceptance, but does not find it with theists, particularly Christians.“

“What strikes me about this is that the exact same sentiment is shared by Christians regarding Atheists by changing the phrase to “….because I do believe in God.” Often, the narrative of Atheists contains a tone of hubris and the assumption of undisputable intellectual high ground, while offensively attacking religion. Consider these titles from Atheist Analysis: “Ignorance Loves Ignorance, the Religious Wall Around You” , “Christianity Isn’t Irrational… It’s Worse Than That.” In my opinion, the berating tones of these titles alone quickly discredits the individual and the view they’re presenting. I make no excuse for the Christian who can’t speak truth in love, however, I believe some in the Atheist community need to apply some introspection and identify their own hypocrisy to build credibility amongst other communities in order to open a more diverse dialogue regarding the quest for truth.”

I agree with the majority of the message here, that we are only going to create a secular state, one of equality and hegemony, if we truly respect the thoughts and positions of those we do not agree with, on philosophical terms or otherwise, and are willing to protect their basic human rights as they would ours.  Applying the golden rule, we have to act as we would wish the rest of world to treat us.

Leave Well Enough Alone: How Doing Nothing Can Be Louder

image

I was recently enthralled to learn of a Satanic Temple temporary display that was to be erected on the capitol lawn in Lansing Michigan this holiday season.  The display being a response by the Detroit branch of the Satanic Temple to the planned nativity scene by a group from out of state wishing to promote their religious worldview on state property.

While news of this flavor of tit for tat rivalry is nothing new to my weary eyes and ears, I was surprised to learn that the Christian group had notified the authorities or locals that they could not follow through as they could not tear down the scene every night.  The temporary requisite, non permanent status being put up daily and torn down nightly, could not be met by the out of town Christians thus they were not going to have a display.

At this point the media became fixated on the satanic temple’s intention to place a fixture on the lawn.  Of course an uncontested “Satanic” display was taken even more as an antagonistic effort and further incensed the local Christian majority.  At this point I ask: what is the point.  In all reality, after hearing the failure of the nativity scene to be properly erected and torn down, what is the need for a responsive secular display.
